Plucked By My Ancestors

Acrylic paint and molding paste on canvas— 21.5 x 27

Created for my ancient Egyptian art history course in which I studied ‘qasr,’ terracotta pots, native plants, and their healing properties. Mixing paint with molding paste, I molded the pot and stems of the anemones (poppies) and lotus’, native plants of Egypt.

While Ancient Egyptians associated anemone’s with death and illness, in the present day, choosing to paint anemones is a symbol of the ongoing resistance against the Israeli occupation and genocide of the Palestinian people since the first Nakba in 1948. The red anemone is considered the national flower of Palestine and was plucked and displayed in homes to remind Palestinians of their ongoing collective struggle as they welcomed guests to their home.

The anemone was believed to have healing properties, but if prepared improperly was poisonous when ingested.

The color palette is inspired by Ancient Egyptian foods (loquats, olives, and eggplant), tablets, and storytelling paintings on clay vessels

Mental Maelstrom

Metal Sculpture. Hand bend, sand blasted, and welded.

Mental Maelstrom addresses the whirlpool of my mind. In Greek mythology, Sisyphus teaches us to never run away from our failures, but rather accept them, much like we do with our achievements. The curse of Sisyphus tells us a tale of a king who was condemned to live his life in service of a fruitless task- repeatedly pushing a stone up a hill only for it to roll down each time he was about to approach the top. Being someone who is constantly trying new things thinking I’m getting close to finding how to approach my life with such an active mind is the stone I am constantly rolling up the mountain. I’ve accepted that my emotions can feel chaotic at times, but I can always find new ways to self sooth and enjoy the journey. and maintain a steady mind without taking medication.
